In "Message to my freshman students” Parsons Celebrates the fact that incoming freshman are adults “entering into another country". He simply places it on the table and says “I am your professor not your teacher”. He elevates professors over teachers as if they are a lower species. He addresses the point that they hold your hand throughout high school. They motivate and push you because their pay checks depend on your performance on tests. He adds that this is the reason freshman are unprepared when they enter college. Instead of hands on work and constant supervision, teaching has been replaced with lecture. Parson states that this generation has such a miniature attention span that they tend to drift off or become likes zombies when listening. Not taking key information from the lecture like they should. He emphasizes that “critical listening evaluates what was said and seeks key concepts”. He also believes freshman should listen more and sift through the information given to grasp the main points of a lecture. Parson blatantly states that “I am here to lead you to the fountain of knowledge, whether you drink deeply or gargle is entirely up to you.” Simply put he gives you the information; it’s your choice to retain and keep it. He also incorporates all professors as not caring. His idea is he gets paid whether you pass or fail. He is cold and barren towards freshman. He is Unrelenting. His thoughts are towards freshman as a whole. He is devoted to his feelings, stout, and unmovable.
